Hello, Welcome
I am based in Richmond, London and offer Counselling & Psychotherapy face to face and online.
One of the key indicators of successful therapy is the quality of the working relationship between you and your therapist, and that is only possible if there is some chemistry there. That is why I am inviting you to spend 50 minutes with me, free of charge, with no obligation to continue, so you can decide whether you think I am the right therapist for you.
If you wish to know more about me and how we would work together please read on. If you have decided you would like to contact me then jump to Next Steps.
Counselling provides a unique space and time away from the people and situations you are currently encountering.
People come to counselling for many different reasons; sometimes because your current experience of yourself and the world is too difficult, anxiety provoking, or depressing; or perhaps you have a general dissatisfaction and want to understand more about the root of this. You may be feeling okay, but have unanswered questions which bother you and just will not let you be.
Together with me in counselling, you will find the support and space to connect to your thoughts, your feelings and your voice and to consider how you may wish to create a different way to be in yourself and in your relationships with the world.
Therapy can help you to:
- manage depression, anxiety and stress in new ways, and address their underlying causes
- express difficult feelings or emotions which you have been carrying with you
- discover greater depths of feeling and emotion, which enable you to know more clearly what you want and do not want
- act with greater clarity and awareness with the actions you take and the choices you make
- react with less impulsivity, and have the time and space within yourself to choose how to respond from a centered and calm place
- understand ways of behaving which may have been with you since childhood, and which perhaps no longer serve you well
- explore your identity and sexuality
- (re)connect with your sexual libido and desire
- gain new perspectives on your past, present and future life
- feel more comfortable in your own skin
- manage difficult life transitions, such as separation and bereavement
- understand patterns which exist in your relationships with other
- Increase feelings of self worth and heal feelings of shame
- .......... or you may not know why you are seeking support, and we can explore this together
How I Work, My Approach
I believe that health and growth is best facilitated in the context of a relationship. I offer my willingness to see, hear and accept you as you are, without preconception, expectation or judgement. I offer a safe, confidential space for us to explore together your current situation.
I believe we have all made many choices in life in times of difficulty or danger, which were the best way of coping in that moment. These coping behaviours and patterns were often created unconsciously in childhood. Sometimes these ways of coping become stuck or fixed and do not allow for flexible and responsive adaptation to the reality of the current adult world now experienced. This can limit our ability to live full and happy lives connected to our own needs and desires, and to having fulfilling relationships with others.
My approach is to raise your awareness of the ways in which you experience yourself and relate to others. This can then lead to you having the ability to choose better how to deal with each new situation in a way which is appropriate and satisfying in that particular moment.
My therapeutic work is grounded in Gestalt therapy which is a creative, holistic and humanistic approach supporting personal growth, self acceptance and response-ablity. I work with you as a whole person, paying attention to your thoughts, emotions and felt experience. I work relationally, meaning that I bring myself into the therapeutic relationship with you as another human being, sharing my responses, thoughts and feelings with you.
My approach and training support creative, experimental and at times playful engagement and we may use sound and movement if this seems useful and comfortable. With some clients a purely talking therapy is right for them and I will always adapt my way of working to each unique person and situation.
About Richard
Training & Relevant Experience
I am a UKCP registered Psychotherapist in advanced training, having completed five years of Psychotherapy training. I have worked within a low cost counselling service and have seen NHS clients in a GP surgery. I have experience working in short term focused therapy (6 to 12 weeks) and longer term.
I have been involved with Psychotherapy since 2010 either as a client, a student or as a therapist. I came to the counselling profession having experienced huge benefit myself from working with a therapist and so have direct experience of the range of emotions which can accompany a therapeutic journey, as well as what can make this a meaningful experience.
My Background & Interests
I was married for 20 years and have raised three children. I have experienced the joys and challenges of long term relationship and parenting, and experienced the huge transition following the end of my marriage.
My background is in accounting and I now split my time between my work in organisations and with individuals in counselling.
I am passionate about dance and human movement and have a regular long-term embodied movement practice.
I am interested in Systemic/Family Constellations and have completed a one year foundation training in this approach.
I have recently been exploring Tantra and the spiritual, embodied and psychological learning from that. I have completed an 18 month training with Jan Day, one of the UKs leading Tantra teachers. I am currently assisting Jan on a subsequent 18 month group training.
